10 Tips for Successfully Learning at Home

1.     Establish an organized space of some kind for “work.” This will help your child switch into “school mode” more easily than if you are attempting to instruct in an area where they can be distracted by other activities.

2.     Limit distractions, such as TV, toys, loud pets, etc.. to the best of your ability.  If something is available to look at and be interested in, kids will be looking at it. You want the teacher doing the lessons to be the most interesting thing in the room at any given time.

3.     Consider your seating arrangement. For children who have difficulty staying seated, consider the position of his or her chair. Make sure that you and your child are comfortable and supported.

4.     Be prepared with general materials you may need to support your child in learning and have them at easy access.  Consider both the activities the teachers (and/or you) will be teaching for your child’s grade level and curriculum.  Looking at your school’s website and checking out any recommended materials lists can be helpful.

5.     Consider your child’s ability to organize their time and complete tasks.  Do not expect your child to be able to do this completely on their own. Older children can learn how to do this for themselves, but part of school is teaching younger children to be organized and to manage their time.

6.     Have a plan for rewarding your child and for rewarding yourself. We all need a little extra motivation every now and then. Especially when starting something new.

7.     Schedule time EVERYDAY to prepare for your day. Having a set routine will help your child prepare for their day.  Have your materials ready before the school day begins. Older children can learn to do this for themselves!

8.     Make a plan to alternate seated and more active activities throughout the day. No one wants to sit all day long (this goes for kids and homeschooling parents).

9.     Don’t suffer in silence! If you are having a hard time or need extra support with your child, ask for help. Contact your child’s teacher/school for support.

10.  Be gracious to yourself and don’t expect perfection.  Adjust as you go. It will be ok!
