Creating a Workspace For Distance Learning or Homeschool

We will be doing virtual learning next year and I needed a space that my child could be successful in AND I felt comfortable enough in to want to be there most of the day.

Components of this area include:

- Comfortable seating (my old hips couldn’t take the wooden chairs and the arms of these chairs help support my daughter to sit better and stay in her seat)

- Table that is a comfortable height for my daughter (stability in positioning is really important in support of positive sitting and attending behaviors). My table is a chalkboard so I can write on it as well if needed.

- General school materials (caddy on the table at easy reach for high use items and extra materials on the shelves to reach quickly as well). In the caddy, pencils, glue, crayons, markers, ruler, scissors, lotion, hand sanitizer, figit toys for busy hands and a box of tissues. On the shelves, notepads, plain paper, math manipulatives, some small activities for wait or down time (puzzles, small toys), books, chargers for devices

- Quick rewards such as stickers, stamps and even a little container of treats for really special reward times (we use jelly beans)

- On the wall, behavioral reminders charts, calendar, white board and chalk board (hanging on hooks not mounted for easy access and removal)

- A place to display a couple art projects to make the area personalized and friendly

- Racks on the walls to hold materials when we get them from school (math and reading workbooks, paper materials, etc..)

Remember when making a space, think about your child’s needs and your own! If your child is younger, your area can be more toy heavy, if your child grabs materials and gets distracted, you may benefit from a higher shelf to keep things out of reach or containers that are harder to open. I’m happy to help if you need ideas! Feel free to comment or message Also, I spent very little money on this area. Most of the materials I had already and many of them I got for extremely low prices at discount stores. Many things I have been gifted by friends with older children. If you need something, ask around before you buy! You never know what your neighbors have in their garages!

Good luck and love to all as we start the school year in a new way. We can do this!
